Extreme performance. With extreme experience.

Photographer.

I always felt photojournalism was like receiving a gift from a stranger, who allows me to enter their life and capture their moment with them briefly. Without that access, without that permission, I would never get those photographs or be able to solicit change through the power of photojournalism.

Short Stories.

It all begins with an idea. In my case, I wanted to put to words the fantastic images I was capturing around the world. Storytelling is an excellent way to connect, entertain, and pass on important information. Writing helped me tell a complete back story to my photographs and share it with the world.

Book Author.

It was finding my father’s WWII prisoner of war diary changed my outlook on life. Being captured in Normandy and forced brutally to walk the 825 miles to a German Prison camp called Stalag VIIA and then being incarcerated for ten long months was no small task. It compelled me to write Hidden Hell and lead two other successful books, my third with National Geographic.

This is the story of an unusual friendship between two imaging professionals, Robert Miller and Andrew Wakeford. They met by chance in 2010 and quickly realized that their photojournalism and photography work complemented each other's abilities and allowed them to reach new levels with storytelling and imagery.

Despite living on different continents, they decided to produce a visual photo book focusing on unique veterans' stories worldwide within months of meeting each other. After that, successful photojournalism projects developed, resulting in them landing a coveted photo book commission from National Geographic.

The result? A fantastic array of worldwide stories, powerful images, and subject matter has given them international acclaim and recognition for their work. "Portraits of US" was born from the need for creativity and focus and was a powerful outlet for their collaborative effort.

Portraits of US on Substack will center around a broad range of themes that people don't usually see or authors normally write about. The content will vary and cover various photographic projects.
